Abstract

The vocabulary is closely related to the basic activity of the communities in the Sibiu area (the so-called “Mărginimea Sibiului”), namely shepherding. In localities based on ancient occupations, an equally ancient language has become established. The communication focuses on specific terms in the field of shepherding, using a vocabulary of everyday activities, traditional household activities, and the organisation of elements related to shepherding and transhumance. Thus, the work presents the names of the trades and objects related to sheep farming, the organisation of the sheepfold, the composition of the sheep flock, the names of products and other activities. Unlike other research, mainly lexicographic, aiming at the hoarding of terms used in sheepherding and transhumance, this work illustrates the degree of activity or passivity of these forms of language. The research focuses on the extent to which this vocabulary is still known today, raising the question of its preservation as part of the intangible heritage.
